Simply put, homeowners who have an alarm system need to get in the habit of activating it when gone - period. Statistics show that an intruder surprised by the sound of an alarm or strobe lights will quickly leave, choosing a different house to rob.

Locks that do not Work - Another mistake pertaining to home security is a broken lock. Many people have good intentions but are procrastinators. This means the non-working lock on the door or window may not seem like a priority to the homeowner but to the person wanting to get inside, it is an open invitation. Locks are inexpensive and installation is often easy. Therefore, any broken locks need to be changed - today.

Storage Sheds and Detached Garages - Another area often overlooked as a potential problem for home security includes storage sheds and detached garages. First, many people do make the effort to lock them. With this, a burglar could easily get inside and take all types of property, perhaps even an automobile.
Another problem is that many times, a shed or garage houses tools that could easily be used for breaking into a home. Therefore, installing a good lock on sheds and detached garage doors is imperative in keeping the home and property safe.
